Our Story

The Society for Welfare HIV Infected People (SHIP) is a community-based, non-profit organization established in 2003 by People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh. The organization was founded in response to the widespread stigma, discrimination, social exclusion and economic hardships experienced by individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

At a time when access to treatment, social protection and public awareness on HIV was limited, people living with HIV often faced rejection from families, communities, educational institutions and workplaces. Children affected by HIV were particularly vulnerable to school dropout, poor nutrition, emotional distress and denial of opportunities for a healthy and dignified future.

Recognizing the need for a collective community response, SHIP was formed as a platform where people living with HIV could unite, support one another, advocate for their rights and work towards improving their overall quality of life. Since its inception with just 7 founding members, SHIP has been guided by the belief that every individual, regardless of HIV status, deserves dignity, equality, access to essential services and the opportunity to participate fully in society.

Over the years, SHIP has evolved into a trusted grassroots organization working at the intersection of health, education, child welfare, gender equality and social justice. The organization collaborates closely with government departments, health institutions, educational institutions, community networks and civil society organizations to promote HIV awareness, reduce stigma and discrimination, strengthen access to treatment and care, and ensure the protection of vulnerable children and families.

SHIP's interventions extend beyond HIV prevention and treatment advocacy. The organization works to improve educational outcomes for children living with and affected by HIV, provide nutritional and psychosocial support, promote women's leadership and empowerment, strengthen community participation and advocate for inclusive policies and welfare measures.

With more than two decades of grassroots experience, SHIP continues to serve as a voice for marginalized communities and a catalyst for social change.
