Children living with HIV (CLHIV) and children affected by HIV in their families face risks that go well beyond health: school dropout, poor nutrition, emotional distress and denial of ordinary childhood opportunities. SHIP's children's programme responds with a holistic approach that treats a child's education, nutrition, protection and emotional wellbeing as equally important.
SHIP helps identify and enrol CLHIV and affected children into its support network, then works with families and schools to keep children learning - through school enrolment support, scholarships, books, uniforms and learning materials.
Alongside education, SHIP runs nutrition support, treatment adherence counselling for children on ART, and psychosocial counselling for children and their caregivers, together with life-skills and adolescent development sessions and caregiver support groups.
